When Prince Fielder hit his second home run of the night on Wednesday, he did more than lift the Brewers to a 5-4 win over the Phillies. He hit two home runs in a game for the first time this season and made a little personal, meaningless history in the process.
In 2007, when Fielder became the youngest player in baseball history to hit 50 home runs, his first two-homer effort also came on April 23, also in a 5-4 win. In each contest, his second homer of the night was the game-winner for the Brew Crew.
On Wednesday, the winner was his two-run shot off Cole Hamels with Milwaukee down 4-3 in the eighth. Last season, he homered in the eighth to pull the Brewers to within a run, 4-3, then won the game in the 12th with a solo shot off reliever Rocky Cherry.
There was a big zero in Fielder’s home run column for the first 14 games of 2008, so it’s got to be a relief to know that Fielder was in nearly identical position last year. Breathe a little easier, fantasy owners, he should make another pretty good run at 50 homers.
Some other meaningful long balls …
Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers - Hit his second in as many days in a 19-6 win over the Texas Rangers. His season line now stands at a sturdy .263-5-18, and the Tigers are back to within four games of .500 at 9-13 overall.
Matt Stairs, Toronto Blue Jays - His two homers Significant because they were his first since inheriting the role from recently released Frank Thomas. Don’t forget, Stairs is a guy that hit .288 with 21 homers and 65 RBIs in 357 at-bats last season. Do the math if gets 500 at-bats this season.
Ken Griffey Jr., Cincinnati Reds - Griffey hit the 597th homer of his career in a loss to Houston. He is looking to become the sixth member of the 600-home run club and pushing Sammy Sosa (609) for fifth on the all-time list.
Geovany Soto, Chicago Cubs - Was the rookie’s third of the season, a solo shot in the second inning of a 7-6 win in Colorado. He went 4-for-5 and added his seventh double of the year, upping his season average to .353.
More opinions …
Nine Bo Jacksons likes what it has seen from Soto. The site has Soto valued as the No. 2 catcher in fantasy.
Among other things, Thunder Matt’s Saloon sees Frank Thomas ending up in Tampa Bay.
Sportaphile is right to wonder, Where’s All The Hoopla For Ken Griffey Jr’s 600th Home Run?
