Free Agent Profiles: Hitters

As the season rolls on, familiar names like Brian Giles and Garret Anderson have begun to meet expectations, while a few fresh faces like Blake DeWitt and David Murphy are making names for themselves. All are available in most leagues and can provide elusive but necessary depth.

We’ll get into these players and more with free agent profiles on 10 players who could help your team out. Stay tuned each week for profiles on both hitters and pitchers.

The full list:
Garret Anderson, OF, Los Angeles Angels

Status: Aging but still producing for first-place Angels
Key Stats: .500 average and 6 RBIs during 8 game hit streak
What to Watch For: How he fits into overloaded Angels outfield
Other Notes: .319 home batting average but 16 of 25 RBIs have come on the road

Randy Winn, OF, San Francisco Giants
Status:
Igniting struggling Giants offense
Key Stats: .358 average during 13 game hitting streak
What to Watch For: Whether his 33-year-old, oft-injured legs will hold up
Other Notes: Switch-hitting Winn hitting .357 off of left-handers but has 10 of 14 RBIs from left side of the plate

Akinori Iwamura, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays
Status: Rays winning with Iwamura leading off
Key Stats: .387 average and .484 on base percentage in last 7 games
What to Watch For: Whether unseasoned Iwamura has enough plate discipline (114 Ks in 2007)
Other Notes: Hitting .308 at Tropicana compared to just .233 on the road

Brian Giles, OF, San Diego Padres
Status: Glimmer of hope in hapless Padres lineup
Key Stats: 12 hits in last 16 at bats to raise average to .307
What to Watch For: If he will get any pitches to hit in a stagnant Padres offense
Other Notes: Power numbers are down since arriving in San Diego, but hitting .357 away from Petco

David Murphy, OF, Texas Rangers
Status: Another piece in young Texas outfield
Key Stats: .478 average and 6 RBIs last 5 games
What to Watch For: If he gets as many at bats with Marlon Byrd returning from the DL
Other Notes: 5 of 6 home runs and 23 of 28 RBIs off lefthanders   

Emil Brown, OF, Oakland Athletics
Status: 7th in Majors with 33 RBIs
Key Stats: .429 average in 42 at bats with runners in scoring position
What to Watch For: Will teammates continue to produce ahead of him
Other Notes: Identical .256 batting average at home and on the road with 3 more RBIs at home

Blake DeWitt, 3B, Los Angeles Dodgers
Status:
Third baseman for foreseeable future
Key Stats: .409 with 2 homers over the past 6 games
What to Watch For: An increase in power numbers (4 homers in 110 at bats)
Other Notes: .368 average and .429 OBP at Dodger Stadium

Jayson Werth, OF, Philadelphia Phillies
Status:
Making case for more starts
Key Stats: .533 batting average and 12 RBIs over last four games
What to Watch For: If he can hit right handed pitching in hitter-friendly parks
Other Notes:4 home runs, 17 RBIs and 5 stolen bases at Citizens Bank Park

Andre Ethier, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Status:
Consistent in middle of Dodgers’ lineup
Key Stats: Hitting .333 with .395 OBS against righthanders
What to Watch For: Whether he can figure out left handed pitching
Other Notes: Has hit in 7 different spots in Joe Torre’s lineup

Gary Matthews, OF, Los Angeles Angels
Status: Hitting just .233, but regaining stroke and ready to break out of slump
Key Stats: .280 average and .333 OBP last 7 days
What to Watch For: Despite slump, still reaching base (22 walks) and should reach 20 stolen bases
Other Notes: .247 batting average at home compared to just .198 on the road, but 4 home runs and 13 RBIs away from Angel Stadium
