A trade to the Florida Marlins took left-hander Andrew Miller off our fantasy radars, but he is pitching his way right back on it. With his seven shutout innings and career-high nine strikeouts against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, Miller improved to 4-1 in his last six starts and continued a streak of four straight outings allowing two earned runs or less.
The damage Miller did to his early earned run average and WHIP - he was 0-2 with an 11.37 ERA after three starts - still has a glaring effect on his bottom line. It took Thursday’s gem to lower those numbers to 5.33 and 1.66, respectively.
Command has been a major factor, but rather than high walk rates, he got into trouble by leaving pitches out over the plate. Opponents are still batting .311 against him this season, but Miller is quickly reversing that trend. Limiting the National League West-leading Diamondbacks to five singles over seven innings is certainly the most encouraging sign yet.
Miller’s poor season numbers, though he does have a 4-3 record, will likely keep him off most fantasy managers’ radars for at least one more start. But, one more dominant outing is all it will take for a waiver wire rush to take place. In mixed leagues, I’d take the extra five days, watch his next start closely, and be ready to pounce if he is this dominant again.
He compares to Randy Johnson in several ways, including his height, arm angle and fastball-slider combo. He hasn’t done anything to completely rule those comparisons out, so get more aware of what he’s doing and when.
