Cleveland Indians right-hander Fausto Carmona and Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday were placed on the disabled list on Sunday, joining pretty good company as injured stars nursing early wounds. Carmona will miss four weeks with a strained right hip, according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, and the Denver Post reported that Holliday was deactivated with a strained left hamdstring.
Jake Westbrook will take Carmona’s spot in the rotation and start on Wednesday vs. the White Sox. Paul Hoynes at the Plain Dealer went on to say:
One more thing, Jake Westbrook is ready to reclaim his spot in the starting rotation. He’ll be activated for Wednesday’s start against the Chicago White Sox, which works out well considering Carmona’s left hip injury.
Carmona had a 4-2 record, 3.10 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 10 starts. He struggled with at least four walks in seven of his first eight starts, but had taken control of the problem with zero free passes last Saturday in Cincinnati. The sinkerballer has worked around the control problems by leading the major leagues (tied, Mark Buehrle) with 15 double plays.
Holliday’s fantasy impact was minimized by a Rockies lineup that struggled to produce RBI opportunities and failed to give Holliday proper protection. He’s seen less to hit and underproduced as a result with eight home runs and 26 RBIs.
Like several other consensus first-round fantasy picks, Holliday has been OK, but not doing the job in the power or run production categories. Sure, his .321 average and eight stolen bases are surprise contributions, but he’s falling short of the 35-homer, 130-RBI expectations owners had for him.
There have been talks that the Rockies may trade the slugger, so stay tuned to the Rockies’ place in the National League standings. The further they fall from contention, the more likely Holliday is to be shipped to a contender.
