Memorial Day has come and gone and as predicted, without surprise, the lovable loser Chicago Cubs share baseball’s best record with, judging by attendance figures, the unlovable Tampa Bay Rays.
The surprises at the top of this week’s power rankings, stunning as they are, are matched by the disappointing teams littering the bottom half. The New York Yankees and New York Mets continue to struggle while the preseason favorite Seattle Mariners became baseball’s last team to 20 wins.
1. Chicago Cubs - Lead MLB in runs scored (5.6) and batting average (.283)
2. Tampa Bay Rays - Bandwagon growing behind much-improved defense
3. Boston Red Sox - 21-5 at Fenway, 11-19 everywhere else
4. Los Angeles Angels - Model of consistency (16-12 at home, 16-11 on road)
5. Arizona Diamondbacks - Dropped 3 straight after placing Eric Byrnes on DL
6. Chicago White Sox - 7-3 in last 10 good enough to stay atop weak AL central
7. Philadelphia Phillies - Lead Major Leagues with 77 home runs
8. Florida Marlins - 76 homers 2nd in league, but only half game up on Phillies
9. Houston Astros - 4.9 runs per game 6th in MLB, but 4.47 ERA 23rd
10. Atlanta Braves - Without Smoltz, pitching staff leads NL in runs allowed (3.8)
11. St. Louis Cardinals - Ryan Ludwick proving he’s capable protection for Pujols
12. Oakland Athletics - 5 game win streak including sweep of Red Sox
13. Baltimore Orioles - 16-8 at home, 10-18 on road a formula for mediocrity
14. LA Dodgers - 4th in NL with .268 batting average, but last in HR (33)
15. Toronto Blue Jays - 2nd in MLB in Ks (409), ERA (3.38), and runs allowed (3.6)
16. Texas Rangers - 3rd in league in runs scored, but last in runs allowed
17. Minnesota Twins - Won 3 in a row after giving up 19 runs to Detroit
18. New York Yankees - At least they’re consistent: 4.5 runs allowed , 4.5 runs scored
19. New York Mets - Progressing Pedro will not help 11-14 May record
20. Cleveland Indians - Victor Martinez hitting .302, but has yet to hit HR
21. Milwaukee Brewers - 3 game win streak, but still just 11-15 in May
22. Detroit Tigers - Predictably, 4.81 ERA ranks last in AL
23. Cincinnati Reds - Staff leads MLB with 436 Ks, but rank 24th in ERA
24. Pittsburgh Pirates - As good as outfield is, infield, pitching just as bad
25. Colorado Rockies - Down to third shortstop after injuries to Clint Barmes
26. San Francisco Giants - Losses piling up: 2 losing streaks of 5 or more games
27. Washington Nationals - New ballpark hasn’t benefitted stagnant lineup
28. San Diego Padres - Peavy, Young injuries not helping league’s worst offense
29. Seattle Mariners - Last team to 20 wins already with 20 road losses
30. Kansas City Royals - Have not won since being no-hit by Jon Lester May 19th
