Free Agent Profiles: Hitters

Posted by Dave DeIuliis

It’s free agent time again, and this week’s list features several players that, as varying in age as they may be, have become veterans of our rankings of players available in at least 50 percent of leagues.

Some, like Jerry Hairston, Eric Hinske and Casey Blake, are beginning to heat up after April and May hibernations, while others like Brian Giles and Randy Winn are consistently producing for poor teams.

The full list:

Jerry Hairston, OF/SS, Cincinnati Reds
Status:
Producing as everyday shortstop
Key Stats: .386 BA, 9 runs during 10 game hit streak
What to Watch For: More run producing opportunities with Jay Bruce in lineup
Other Notes: Hitting .444 against NL Central opponents

Andre Ethier, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Status: Full-time outfielder with Andruw Jones shelved
Key Stats: Hitting .378 during 9 game hit streak, including 4 straight multi-hit games
What to Watch For: Improvement against lefthanders (.163, 1 HR, 3 RBIs)
Other Notes: Virtually identical numbers at Dodger Stadium and on the road

Randy Winn, OF, San Francisco Giants
Status: Producing, and running, in otherwise stagnant lineup
Key Stats: Hit safely in 7 of last 10, including 4 multi-hit efforts
What to Watch For: Steady continuation of May numbers in June
Other Notes: .291 average in 165 at-bats when he hits third in lineup

Eric Hinske, 1B, OF, Tampa Bay Rays
Status: Earning playing time for first-place Rays
Key Stats: 2 home runs, 5 RBIs last 4 games
What to Watch For: More run producing opportunities batting behind Crawford and Upton
Other Notes: Hitting .258 against AL East, and only .208 in Tropicana Field

Yadier Molina, C, St. Louis Cardinals
Status: Becoming offensive as well as defensive threat
Key Stats: .429 average with 2 RBIs and 2 walks in last 4 games
What to Watch For: Little power or speed, but consistent .300 average
Other Notes: Hardest player in MLB to strike out (9 Ks)

Lastings Milledge, OF, Washington Nationals
Status:
Finally beginning to heat up
Key Stats: Hit safely in 9 of last 10 games (.303)
What to Watch For: Not much power, but a stolen base threat with 6 in last 8 games
Other Notes: Most of little power comes off of righthanders ( 3 HR, 16 RBIs)

Mark Ellis, 2B, Oakland Athletics
Status:
Becoming healthy and more productive
Key Stats: 7 for 15, 4 runs in last 4 games
What to Watch For: Better plate discipline (5th among MLB 2B in strikeouts (21))
Other Notes: Power comes at home, (4 HR, 12 RBIs) but hits come on road (.330 BA)

Brian Giles, OF, San Diego Padres
Status: Remains one of few Padres offensive threats
Key Stats: Has reached base safely 10 times in last 4 games, including 5 walks
What to Watch For: If he gets many pitches to hit in an inept Padre’s lineup
Other Notes: Giles’ power has been a casualty of Petco Park, but hitting .350 on the road

Casey Blake, 3B, Cleveland Indians
Status:
Driving in runs, but at a low percentage
Key Stats: .500 average, 3 home runs, 9 RBIs in last 3 games
What to Watch For: If he can put more balls in play (37 Ks, 17 BBs)
Other Notes: .342 average, 6 home runs on the road, but .152 average at Jacobs Field

Mike Cameron, OF, Milwaukee Brewers
Status: Everyday Brewers centerfielder
Key Stats: 7 HR, 17 RBIs in May after only 8 at-bats in April
What to Watch For: Gradual improvement after 25 game suspension to open season
Other Notes: Does not enjoy hitting in Miller Park (.140 average versus .272 on the road)
