Fantasy: Time Running Out to Buy Low on Cano

Posted by mikefratto

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has been one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy baseball this season. He has drawn comparisons to Hall of Famer Rod Carew after hitting .342 in 2006 and following that up with a fantasy-friendly .306-19-97-93 campaign last year.

The Yankees rewarded him in the offseason with a long-term contract that guarantees $30 million over four years with two options that could net Cano $57 million. Despite the club’s vote of confidence, it took Cano until mid-May to get his average above the interstate and he has spent the first half floundering below .250. His peripherals have been hurt as well, and his current 12-homer, 66 RBI pace is well below what fantasy owners were expecting.

Cano has gotten off to a slow start before, and this makes him a perfect buy low candidate. But it seems like time is running out to do so. Cano has been taking better swings this week and is starting to bust out of his slump. He has 10 hits in his past five games, including two homers, and he has added seven RBIs and three runs over that span. He has been slowly raising his average all month and it looks like he just had the breakout week Joe Girardi has been looking for.

Cano is a streaky hitter and is capable of having a huge second half in which he will raise his numbers to what they were expected to be, especially since he hits in the circular Yankee lineup. His value is still low enough that he should be available for cheap compared to what his second half numbers could be. It’s a risk, but certainly one worth taking.
