MLB Team Power Rankings: Week 19

This edition of our power rankings sees the Los Angeles Angels in the top spot. And, with baseball’s best record, an 11.5 game division lead and a lineup featuring Mark Teixeira, Vlad Guerrero and Torii Hunter, it’s hard to argue.

Xavier Nady has helped bump the New York Yankees into the top five, the Arizona Diamondbacks are taking advantage of a favorable schedule and historically weak division, and the Minnesota Twins, behind a soft-tossing but strike-throwing rotation, have climbed back atop the AL Central and into our top 10. Heilman Takes Closer Lead With Wagner on DL

Talk about a blessing and multiple curses all rolled into one. New York Mets closer Billy Wagner was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday with a forearm strain, the New York Daily News reported, opening the door for setup man Aaron Heilman to give ninth-inning duties a crack.

While this is an opportunity for fantasy owners chasing saves, manager Jerry Manuel indicated that others will get their chances. We would even venture to guess that this becomes a committee situation or that 22-year old right-hander Eddie Kunz ends up getting a majority of the chances. Read more »

The middle infield positions are by far the most frustrating and hardest to fill in fantasy baseball. There’s a fine line between it being your team’s strength and an impossible weakness; all it takes is one injury to trigger weeks of scrambling to fill spots. Youth, as is usually the case, provides the best opportunity for quick gains because they are unproven and relatively hard to trust.
