Week 25 Free Agent Profiles: Hitters

Posted by Ryan Staloff

Chances are, you have made some key free agent pickups throughout the regular season that have catapulted you into championship contention. Don’t let that keen eye for the undervalued free agent get away from you just because it’s September.

There are plenty of quality hitters left on the market that can put you over the top and into the winner’s circle. Here are the top 10 free agent hitters that you should consider picking up.

Melvin Mora, 3B, Baltimore Orioles
Status:
Day to day with hamstring tightness, could return as early as today
What to Watch For: Can he shake off the rust and return to early season form?
Other Notes: Just 3 RBIs away from a new career high

Michael Bourn, OF, Houston Astros
Status:
Not starting every day, but making most of opportunities with 38 SBs
What to Watch For: Enough playing time wreak havoc on the base paths
Other Notes: Just 3-for-24 at the plate in his past seven games

Ty Wigginton, 2B/3B/OF, Houston Astros
Status:
Back in the lineup after missing time with a groin injury
What to Watch For: His ability to help surging Houston in the playoff race
Other Notes: Having a career year despite only 348 at bats.

Chris Davis, 1B/3B, Texas Rangers
Status:
Has crushed AL pitching since getting called up in late June
What to Watch For: How he can sustain rookie success, eligibility at third base
Other Notes: .541 slugging percentage ranks among rookie leaders … third base eligibility a bonus, but low average/high power combo projects better at first.

Ryan Shealy, 1B, Kansas City Royals
Status:
On fire since September call-up with 5 HRs
What to Watch For: His standing in a platoon with Kila Kaaihue
Other Notes: Was Royals’ top prospect before fading away in recent seasons

Luke Scott, OF, Baltimore Orioles
Status:
Seeing everyday time in Baltimore outfield
What to Watch For: Improvement against left-handed pitching (.225 AVG)
Other Notes: Has already established a new career-high with 23 home runs

Chris Iannetta, C, Colorado Rockies
Status:
Among league’s most productive catchers
What to Watch For: Has .294 AVG, 1.074 OPS in last 7 games
Other Notes: Leads all catchers in OPS despite limited at bats

Mark Teahen, 1B/3B/OF, Kansas City Royals
Status:
Closing ‘08 with a big September
What to Watch For: Multi-hit games; he has 9 in his last 14 games
Other Notes: Hitting .407 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs in his last 15 games … never been a big producer — his career-best RBI output was 69 in 2006 — but can offer a solid 5-category line during a fantasy owner’s time of need.

Brian Giles, OF, San Diego Padres
Status:
At 37 years young, still playing everyday for Padres
What to Watch For: More power - has averaged just 13 HRs in five seasons as a Padre
Other Notes: Ranks 6th in the National League with a .397 OBP, 9th with a .304 AVG.

Cameron Maybin, OF, Florida Marlins
Status:
Off to a scorching hot start in his first week
What to Watch For: Contact rate, how high Ks affect batting average
Other Notes: .Was 9-for-11 (.818) in his first four games … after a 1-for-3 performance vs. Philadelphia, his average “fell” to .714 … projects as 20-20 hitter or better, but may struggle with batting average a la Mike Cameron.
