Fantasy Free Agent Profile: Jason Kubel

Posted by Dustin Hockensmith

Minnesota Twins designated hitter Jason Kubel only looks like a 40-year-old seasoned veteran. Reality is, he is just 27 years old and in his fourth full season in the big leagues. Each of those four seasons has been better than the one before, by the way, including this season, in which he is on pace for career-highs in batting average, home runs and RBIs.

Kubel’s situation reminds us a little of Texas Rangers’ DH Hank Blalock - find a way to keep his fragile body healthy, get big results. Well, the Twins have given Kubel that chance this season, thanks in large part to a glut of talented outfielders in Denard Span, Carlos Gomez, Michael Cuddyer and Delmon Young. Kubel, who can play both corner outfield positions, has gotten the majority of his at-bats as a DH.

Kubel has stayed fresh and healthy as a result, and the numbers have spoken for themselves. When he’s healthy, Kubel has the rare potential to post a .300 batting average as well as 25-plus home runs. As such, he makes for a nice addition in all fantasy league formats.

Kubel’s full free agent profile (numbers as of June 12 games) …

Status: Staying healthy as Twins’ primary DH
Basics: .314 AVG, 10 HRs, 36 RBIs, 0 SBs in 55 games
Key Stats: Tied for MLB lead with 5 June HRs
What to Watch For: Health - is a quality player, but injury prone
Other Notes: Looks like a player much older, but is still just 27 years old … hasn’t come out of nowhere to be this good; is a former top prospect who hit .272 with 20 HRs and 78 RBIs last season … is only getting better; has raised his slugging percentage and OPS in each of the last 4 seasons
Verdict: Combo of quality average and power; should be added in all leagues
