Looks like Toronto Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay will be the talk of the trade market again this winter.
Halladay was dangled prior to last summer’s July 31 trade deadline, but then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi demanded a premium deal for the 32-year-old and was unable to land it. Blue Jays team president Paul Beeston confirmed to the New York Post last week that Halladay, who has one year left on his contract, is unlikely to re-sign with the team, once again putting his name in the middle of trade conversation.
The Boston Red Sox are interested, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe; as are the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and LA Dodgers. All four destinations represent tremendous upgrades to Halladay’s fantasy value. In fact, exiting Toronto’s full-scale franchise rebuilding effort to virtually ANY other city would be the best thing for the perennial Cy Young contender.
Halladay’s fantasy value centers around his ability to limit damage and consistently work deep into starts. He led Major League Baseball with nine complete games and ranked second with 239 innings pitched last season, making his 2.79 ERA and 1.13 WHIP all the more effective. Halladay has also honed his ability to make hitters swing and miss, posting career-high strikeout totals in each of the last two seasons.
Consistency matters in fantasy baseball, and Halladay is annually one of baseball’s best bets to reach all of the landmark totals for starting pitchers: 20 wins, sub-3.00 ERA, 200 innings and 200 strikeouts. A move to a contender, which seems more and more likely by the day, would only increase his chances of reaching those goals.
Until then, look for Halladay to fall in line behind names like Tim Lincecum, Felix Hernandez and CC Sabathia on draft day.
