Frank Francisco managed to squeeze a full season’s worth of frustration for fantasy owners into just a single week after a disastrous start to the 2010 campaign.
After blowing both of his save opportunities this week, allowing an eye-popping six runs over just one inning over those appearances, manager Ron Washington decided to demote Francisco in favor of setup man Neftali Feliz.
The 21-year-old Feliz has never closed games in the majors before, and it’s still unknown if the young right hander can handle the role mentally. The Rangers need him to adjust to the new role quickly, because I don’t think Washington wants Francisco and his 27.00 ERA back in the role anytime soon, even if Washington is calling the move temporary.
In the set-up role, the hard-throwing Feliz has been dominant, retiring the last six batters he faced and recording two holds before handing the ball off to Francisco, who proceeded to blow two saves. And in his first save opportunity on Monday, Feliz sat down the Indians 1-2-3 in extra innings (Francisco picked up the win after a scoreless ninth).
Holding on Francisco and stashing him on your bench for a few weeks might not be worth it in the end, but fantasy owners must take Washington’s word that this is a temporary move. But, think about it, if you were managing this situation and Feliz was dominant in the ninth inning, would you ever remove him from the role? So long as Feliz is pitching lights-out, he’ll be Washington’s closer.
It’s not a good sign for Francisco when his manager had this to say: “”We just want to give him a chance to pitch in situations where it doesn’t matter what happens.”
Ouch.
Editor’s note: We saw this one coming.
